NATIONALISM IN INDIA - 10 mins Seminar Notes 

 



Definition of nationalism:  IT is an ideology that promote the interest of a particular movement, i.e. gaining and maintaining the nation with sovereignty (self governance). 

1914- first world war & Impacts:
                                1.Huge increase in defence expenditure
                                2.custom duties increases and income tax introduce
                                3.force recruitment in rural areas.

1918-19 and 1920-21

•    Crop filed in many parts of India
•    In 1921, many peoples were died because of poverty.

1915: Gandhi returned india(from south Africa) Organised 3 satyagraha:

1) 1916, Champaran(bihar)
     •    To help the poor farmers
2)  1917,in kheda(Gujarat)
     •    To support the agriculture
3)  1918,Ahmedabad(Gujarat)
     •    To support the cotton mill workers.

Rowlatt act  
•    It gives British officers enough
•    Power to any political leaders and put them in a prison for 2 years.

Nation wide satyagraha:

•    Rallies organised
•    Workers went strikes

Martial law: (general Dyer)
•    Army control in place of local police
•    IN Emergency situation

Jallianwala Bagh;

•    People did not know about martial law being imposed
•    They started non violence.
•    Gandhi called off that movement.
•    ROwlatt act waslimited towns and cities.

Broad movement:

•    It is only possible in hindhu and muslim come together.
