DISASTER MANAGEMENT - PART 2

DISASTER MANAGEMENT - PART 2

MAGMEGURU

VOLCANO

WHAT IS A VOLCANO
•    A volcano is a vent (opening) in the earth’s crust through which molten material erupts suddenly and It allows hot magma, ash and gases to escape from below the surface.
•    Volcanic activity is the most powerful force in nature.
•    Some volcanic eruptions are much more powerful than the largest nuclear explosion.
•    Volcanoes have killed thousands of people and caused some of the most frightening events in human history.
•    Volcanoes are classified on the basis of nature of eruption and the form developed at the surface.

Major types of volcanoes are as follows:

•    Shield volcanoes
•    Composite volcanoes
•    Caldera
•    Mid Ocean Ridge volcanoes

TYPES OF VOLCANOES

SHIELD VOLCANOES
•    A shield volcano is a type of volcano usually composed almost entirely of fluid lava flows. It is named for its low profile, resembling a warrior’s shield lying on the ground.

COMPOSITE VOLCANOES
•    These volcanoes are characterised by eruptions of cooler and more viscous lavas than basalt. These volcanoes often result in explosive eruptions.
•    Along with lava, large quantities of pyroclastic material and ashes find their way to the ground.
•    This material accumulates in the vicinity of the vent openings leading to formation of layers, and this makes the mounts appear as composite volcanoes.

CALDERA
•    Although sometimes described as a crater, the feature is actually a type of sinkhole, as it is formed through subsidence and collapse rather than an explosion or impact when large-amounts of lava are released in a short amount of time.

MID-OCEAN RIDGE VOLCANOES

•    These volcanoes occur in the oceanic areas.
•    There is a system of mid-ocean ridges more than 70,000 km long that stretches through all the ocean basins.
•    The central portion of this ridge experiences frequent eruptions.

FAMOUS VOLCANOES AROUND THE WORLD

VOLCANOES IN INDIA

LIST OF ACTIVE, DORMANT & EXTINCT VOLCANOES IN INDIA

Volcanic activity is the most powerful force in nature. Some volcanic eruptions are much more powerful than the largest nuclear explosion. Volcanoes have killed thousands of people and caused some of the most frightening events in human history. Many people are interested in ways to classify volcanoes.  Below we have give the details of different types of volcanoes in India.

FAMOUS VOLCANOES IN THE WORLD
A volcano is a rupture in the crust of a planetary-mass object, such as Earth, that allows hot lava, volcanic ash, and gases to escape from a magma chamber below the surface. The word volcano is derived from the name of Vulcano, a volcanic island in the Aeolian Islands of Italy whose name in turn comes from Vulcan, the god of fire in Roman mythology.
